chicas fritas

A film by Amanda Reyes

Chicas Fritas is a queer coming of age story that follows Sylvia on a night out in Queens, NY with her best friend and secret crush, Maria. Sylvia has an alcoholic mother who she is determined to be nothing like. This short film explores queer identity through a fiercely feminist lens. I wanted to create a character that embodies the insecurities I faced as an adolescent coming to terms with my queerness but also embodies the inner turmoil a young woman faces when she realizes that she loves her mother and at the same time wants to be nothing like her.

Before leaving Brooklyn and her overbearing, alcoholic mother for college, Sylvia and her best friend go out for a night on the town.
